We’ll be leaving today, so Bo and I hit the mission board to see what was on offer. There were five that weren’t even worth checking the details. There was a retrieval mission to Harvest, but since it is a tow job from near here it wasn’t even going to cover the increased fuel costs.
There was an interesting little research project for one of the casinos, Luck Au Naturale. It is exploring the idea of “natural” cleaners for an “au naturale” experience. They want a researcher to do 11 observations of some small scavengers dealing with a selection of different materials that could be used in rooms. It won’t take much time and won’t bring in much money, but it will cover the fuel to Progress at least.
That was the only one I expected to take. However, Onyx had come with us to check out how mission boards are wired. They became extraordinarily animated about one of the Bounties on offer. It was for some obscure Trithel conman named Slate that had broken parole and fled to Windsong from house arrest on Unity. They demanded we pursue this bounty. I marked our interest without committing to it and organized a discussion back on the ship.
It turns out that this conman conned Onyx’s parents, taking their life savings and costing them the business they’d dreamed of building for years. It left Onyx’s father a broken Trithel. Onyx was practically burning with rage over seeing this con had broken his parole. The rest of the crew had serious reservations, since we’re a crew for research and passenger transport rather than fighters, but we agreed to take it.
Onyx did agree that we’ll need to get some weapons and combat training before taking them on.
